Feliz Día De Los Muertos!
This week at St. Mary’s Home, we were able to celebrate and learn more about the Day of the Dead, or el Día de los Muertos. We learned that this day is a Mexican holiday where families welcome back the souls of their deceased relatives for a brief reunion that includes food, drink, and celebration as well as remembrance of life. It is celebrated each year from October 31-November 2. According to tradition, the gates of heaven are opened at midnight on October 31 and the spirits of children can rejoin their families for 24 hours. The spirits of adults can do the same on November 2. It is common to build alters, or ofrendas, in one’s home with pictures of the deceased, as well as display their favorite foods and drinks for their departed loved ones to have when they arrive. While listening to the story of Day of the Dead, Residents were able to partake in trying traditional pan de muerto, as well as conchas, churros, and steaming hot chocolate. Feliz día de los Muertos!
