On Saint Jeanne Jugan’s birthday

  • October 26, 2011

“Our love is not to be just words or mere talk,
but something real and active.”
(1 Jn 3:18)

A group of us Residents from St. Mary’s Home joined the Residents at St. Joseph’s Home in Palatine to celebrate St. Jeanne Jugan’s birthday yesterday! And what a day it was!

The trip there took about 45 minutes. When we arrived, we were warmly greeted by Mother Provincial Maria Christine, Mother Marguerite, and the Little Sisters. The staff and volunteers made a beautiful welcome sign for us and we each were given handmade name tags. After we had a few minutes to all say hello, we were treated to a special reception with tasty pastries and coffee.

Brother Ted Hercegovics led us on a tour of their home, which ended at the chapel for a special Mass in honor of St. Jeanne Jugan. The service was beautiful with uplifting songs.  The Bible passages reminded us how literally St. Jeanne Jugan responded to God’s call to love our brothers and sisters—us Residents!

After the liturgy, we were treated to an authentic German meal which included bratwurst, potatoes, sauerkraut and of course beer! During lunch, the Kitchen Klangers, put on a live performance featuring old favorites and even some polkas. After we finished, the Sisters and volunteers joined us for games of ring toss, Bunco, and other board games.

We had delightful day and it was hard to say goodbye. We were all treated like family, but I guess that is because we are.
