God Bless Our Troops
On November 13, St. Mary’s Home bedecked the auditorium in red, white and blue in order to celebrate our Veterans in our Home, in our families, and in our hearts. We began the morning, hand on heart, with the singing of the National Anthem. The Chicago Police Department (CPD) dropped off cozy shirts, much needed winter supplies, and even brought their very large (but very friendly!) therapy dog, Arlo, for the Residents to love.
Most importantly, we were able to honor our Residents both at the Home and at Jugan Terrace who served by presenting them with a golden American flag lapel pin and a beautiful blue CPD certificate. Before our Residents were able to snack on delicious red, white and blue themed treats, our Volunteer Coordinator closed the ceremony off with a poem titled “I Am A Veteran” by Andrea Christensen Brett. We are forever grateful for our beloved Residents who risked their lives so we can live freely.
In her poem, Brett said it best:
“You may not know the first time we meet
I’m just another person you see on the street
But I am the reason you walk and breathe free
I am the reason for your liberty.”
