Coffee and Conversations: The Little Sisters Celebrate their 150th Anniversary, LIVE!
By Madeleine Wilmsen
Bright and early on a Tuesday morning at St. Mary’s Home, the Little Sisters began their day with an interview. This wasn’t just any old interview—this interview was broadcast all over the Chicago area on WIND AM 560 morning show “The Answer” with hosts Dan Proft and Amy Jacobson. Chicago morning commuters could tune in and hear both Mother Julie and Sr. Carolyn speak from 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. about the order of the Little Sisters of the Poor, their mission and work, and the celebration of their 150th Anniversary in the United States. The show also featured an interview with Essie Nickens, who is a resident of St. Mary’s Jugan Terrace Apartments.
As the sun rose and the Residents and staff members filed into the auditorium, they were greeted with a tasty breakfast buffet and fresh coffee. Within the first few hours, the room was abuzz with laughter, good food, and, of course, a call-in radio show. If only the listeners of WIND AM 560 could see the joy and excitement on the faces of the Residents.
Although the 150th anniversary is coming to a close, St. Mary’s Home continues to celebrate by living out the values of reverence, compassion, family spirit, and humble service. No matter the year, the Little Sisters will continue to carry out their special mission to care for the elderly poor of Chicago, the USA, and around the world.
