September was “back to school” month at St. Mary’s Home. As a former public school teacher, this was a most exciting time of year for me. When the temperature cooled and the leaves change colors, my mind always thought about vistas to be explored, dreams to be fulfilled and goals to be reached. And I always looked forward to meeting my new class.
Our Residents love this time of year as well. Many of them are parents and have fond memories of their little ones’ school days. So for the past month all of their activities, outings, and gatherings have centered on this theme. The month kicked off with “early dismissal” bingo, which consisted of the “students” being let out early to join the fun.
The monthly men’s gathering (aka poker match) was dubbed a “patrol boys” meeting. Participants were “registered” and fitted with “uniforms.” Outings even required “permission slips.” After the “teachers meeting,” “students” (Residents) and “teachers” (staff) enjoyed a spaghetti luncheon where they ate together in the main dining room.
The month-long celebration culminated in the Fall Assembly. This “school-wide” program included Residents, staff and us Sisters. The acts were clever and very entertaining – just look at these photos!
This month was a lot of fun and I’m so happy that I could be a part of it.
