On Saturday, September 21st, the final day of summer, families of Residents and staff at St. Mary’s Home came together for our annual Family Picnic. Nothing celebrates the changing of seasons better than a family picnic with the Little Sisters of the Poor in our beautiful Enabling Garden. While setting up for the event, many feared that the chilly weather would scare people away. But as food was passed, music and conversation flowed and laughter warmed all those present.
Because we have recently welcomed a number of new Residents to our Home, the picnic was a time for new family members to meet and share a meal with familiar families so dear to all of us. It also allowed both staff and Residents to put faces to names they have all heard, while sharing stories of loved ones.
Children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren filled the tables, enjoying the delicious spread of barbecued chicken, hot dogs, casseroles and fruit. Just as lunch was ending, Resident Dolores Saracino’s niece brought in two large chocolate birthday cakes. These, vanished in the blink of an eye. Needless to say, no one left hungry. As guests finished their meals, children did a water balloon toss and a few fearless dancers took the stage to enjoy some classic tunes.
Because of all the help from families, staff and volunteers, the day was a success from beginning to end! Thanks to everyone who helped and attended. What a great way to begin the fall season! We look forward to seeing everyone again for next year’s family picnic
