Arbor Day
On April 29, 2022 Residents, Sisters, and staff gathered in the garden at St. Mary’s Home for a tree planting ceremony to celebrate Arbor Day. Our beloved Resident Liz welcomed the crowd and explained our purpose for gathering.
As Pope Francis stated in his encyclical Laudato Si’, on care for our common home, “All of us can cooperate as instruments of God for the care of creation, each according to his or her own culture, experience, involvements and talents.” We, as a family, are able to participate in the care and building up of creation by the small gesture of planting a tree.
We together prayed Pope Francis’ prayer for our earth. A generous benefactor donated the Cleveland Pear Tree to be planted along the walkway between St. Mary’s Home and Jugan Terrace. Attendees each added a small cup of dirt—and love—to finish the ceremony.
The lovely oval-shaped tree will reach between thirty and forty feet tall and will sport pure white springtime blossoms and bright orange and yellow leaves in the fall. We hope this new addition to our garden will grace our Residents, Sisters, and staff with beauty for years to come!
