It was hot and muggy on Friday when 24 of my colleagues from Deloitte and I visited St. Mary’s home for a day of volunteering and service. When we arrived, we were greeted with warm smiles – and a big honey-do list! We decided the best plan of action was to divide and conquer! So we split into four teams to tackle the work.
The morning was spent removing the tile flooring in the main kitchen pantry, repainting the loading dock and elevator lobby on the second floor as well as hanging artwork in the hallway. We finished those projects just in time to meet the Residents at the chapel as Mass was concluding to escort them to lunch. Where we got to serve them their meal and then enjoy it ourselves.
After lunch we divided up again. A few painted the pantry, others organized a bingo game for the Residents and the rest of us cleaned up from all of our projects. We were worn out by the late afternoon! But we were not too tired to celebrate the day with an ice cream social with the Residents. As we were leaving the auditorium, some of the Residents were telling us of their plans to head back to their rooms to take naps. This sounded like a good idea to all of us!
IMPACT Day is a year-round celebration of Deloitte’s commitment to local communities. Member firms around the world host IMPACT Day activities where Deloitte professionals spend the day volunteering.
