For the past 6 years, my husband Kary and I along with our family and friends have come to St. Mary’s Home to put on a holiday recital for the Residents. We always come on the Saturday before Christmas and sing our favorite carols during their noon meal.
Our repertoire includes the adults’ favorite song “The Virgin Mary Had a Baby Boy,” and the children’s favorite, “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer.”
This year there were 40 in our group, which included our married children, our grandchildren, aunts, uncles, cousins, in-laws and friends. My daughter Becky and her family flew in from Boston to joins us again. It is wonderful to see how this third generation enjoys participating with us.
In addition to our very informal rehearsals, we stay up late in the evenings leading up to the big day to bake homemade cookies (about 8 dozen this year) which are always a hit with the Residents, Sisters and staff. We also hand out little “presents” to each Resident to let them know how much we care.
It is amazing how this idea my husband had many years ago, has now become the highlight for
our family’s Christmas celebration and a St. Mary’s Home tradition.
Merry Christmas!
